Ear Infections in Kids
Ear infections happen when viruses or bacteria collect in the middle ear, the space right behind the eardrum. Infection can be brought on by a cold, the flu, or allergies. Children get more ear infections than adults because the parts of the ear that drain fluid (the Eustachian tubes) are smaller and don't drain well. When the tubes swell or fill with mucus, it creates the perfect conditions for bacteria to grow and lead to infection. If your child is complaining of ear pain or pulling at their ears, they may have an ear infection.
A typical infection goes away on its own, especially if it’s from a virus. Sometimes your child needs antibiotics to kill infections caused by bacteria. Call your healthcare provider to find out the best treatment for your child.
